The Gaunting Spellsong

When the Ode came down upon Dendria, Kearnhold burned under their war machines — but Midrath's waiting armies were not beaten in the field. They were sung still. The opening Fable, Warsongs — playable today, in the game since the eighth Prelude — shows that night from a sparrow's height: the siege of Castle Kearnhold, a mother cradling her infant in her chamber atop the keep, and the old narration counting the child's fate like beads on a string: by Mother saved, by Grandfa' raised and, alas, at last, by Ode enslaved. The Wiki's keepers, gathering what the game lets slip, record that the charm was first loosed the very night of arrival, and that Midrath's awaiting armies were stilled by it where they stood.

What the song takes is not life but the shape of a life. The spellsung forget their memories, then their history, then their culture; their eyes go glossy and white; even the beasts of the field fall under it. Mark the invader's bitter naming, Envoy: they are called the Ode — a song of praise — and their first weapon is a charm-song. On Alca, music of command is the enemy's craft, and this folio names it only as theirs.

The song's harvest is soldiers. The Wiki's collation of in-game record holds that a Tempest is a blueblood — an Envoy — turned by the Spellsong into the Ode'n legion, and the opening narration owns the shame outright: the player's own Envoy was so taken, enslaved before the story starts. Conquered lands are held the same way. In the playable Torment Stag, Lady Deora, Knightmaiden of Curlail, stands as Synod's spellsung Regent, made to cry his claim over the very stag that knew her when she was a girl and he a fawn. And a Tempest called Bayor — red-armed, raven-shadowed — already haunts the edges of the playable record, grovelling before Lord Synod in a Waste Bear vision and petting the stolen pup Nightling as The Shewolf Snared closes; his own Fable, Warsongs, announced at TennoCon 2026 for this fall, is not yet playable. What the song did or did not do to him, the record does not yet know.

Against the binding music the official record sets a question, not an answer: who will learn the melodies of soul unbinding, and break the gaunting spellsong? The one breaking we can witness in play is Deora's. Her charm cracks not under force but under memory, when the Envoy raises her child-self out of the Silvern Sea: remembering is the counter-melody. How the player's own binding broke — cast from the Skytowers in the Wiki's Year 925, washed ashore whole — no source says, and the record keeps the gap. One tale from the hearth-benches, and it is only that: forum-folk reason that the captured Empress, whose power is song, may be the stolen voice behind the charm. Name it theory, and let it warm its hands at a distance.

Three kinds of soul slip the snare. The deaf and the drunk cannot be sung — so Midrath's rebellion of Grace, the Silent Rose, drinks its defiance in an inn near Salzbrim and keeps its letters in cipher. The Omen Beasts, old as the land's own weather, seem beyond the charm's reach; the reveal poem says they remember still and tell the cost. And the Sproutfolk hear differently than folk of flesh do, so the song finds no purchase in them at all — which is why the Ode round them up like contraband.

Chief among these is Avakot, the Sproutfolk salesman who sprouted just before the Ode arrived. The invaders have caged him more than once; the record says the song could not hollow him, so he remembers what Midrath forgot. He leads Alca's Children, the Enclave whose door-creed asks if you remember the time before the cans, when creatures danced uncaged. And it is no small thing that the community raised its great wiki under his name: the one who cannot be made to forget, lending his name to the place where remembering is kept.

The song does not work alone. Where the charm empties heads, fire empties shelves: the Ode burned the great Pensive's archive at the College, till words lived only in smoke. They burn the Histories of every land they take — the Feybles of Othavess among them, the Wiki records — and Orlick's saga Oblivio puts the theft at its plainest: the Ode have taken even the names of our towns. A people who cannot remember, and cannot look anything up, are conquered twice.

Which is why the counterworks are so humble. In The Last Pensive, the Envoy carries a stolen quill back to a ghost, and Orlick the Bicameral — last scholar of the burned College — sets his study in the Nightfold and opens the Journal: the first shelf rebuilt on water, in a refuge hidden upon the fabled Silvern Sea. Even the official hearth-board carries the charge over its door: help reclaim Alca's lost archives. This folio stands in that line. Every name written and witnessed is a note the charm cannot hold; an archive is not a monument to memory but a weapon made of it.
