The Omen Beasts

Before men counted years, Alca set great animals over her essence: one to a domain, ward and warden both. The Dendrit herds knew a stag; the wolves ran under a shewolf; the Wevetwood answered to a bear. The old records call them Omen Beasts, and the invader calls them prey. Lord Synod desires them captured for his own twisted ends, and where his hunters succeed the beasts bellow their mourning in Ode'n chain. Yet the reveal-poem gives them a second office: where the enemy's spellsong strips memory from men, the beasts remember still, and tell the cost. Every one of their fables ends in a freeing, not a funeral — that is the shape of the whole tale.

The enemy makes counterfeits. From pools of corruption at night rise the Vadagar, spirits of Ichor that mimic the Omen Beasts' forms: a Vadagar Stag haunts the night pools, and since the thirteenth Prelude a Vadagar Bear stalks Midrath beneath moonlit skies. Where the true beasts ward, the mimics waste. And one true beast is still only a tale: it is said the green moon Iridis keeps a patron of his own, a great blue-glowing whale that serenades the moonrise. No fable has found it yet. The record keeps the gap, and the sea keeps the whale.

He introduces himself by his full style: Stag of the Andurin Glades, Omen-Ward of the Dendrit herds. In Year 310 of Midrath's count, Garren Shrine was raised to an earlier stag, Odulf Rood — a token, the shrine-record implies, of a lineage of Roods, antler passed to antler. As a fawn Garren grew beside a girl named Deora, heir of the Knightmaidens. Then the Ode took Dendria, took Deora's mind with the spellsong, and set her — Synod's glossy-eyed Regent now — to corrupt the friend of her childhood.

The Torment Stag is the first of the Omen Beast fables, playable since the earliest Preludes builds. It ends in a double unbinding: the Envoy raises Deora's child-self from the Silvern Sea to crack the song's hold on her, then cleanses the Ichor-risen stag she was made to twist. Both are salvaged; neither is slain. After, Garren Rood grants his Pact, and its whole incantation is three words: Make them kneel. The freed remember who chained them.

The Sinecure snared Orengall, the Omen Shewolf, in Banneret Styne's voltaic chains, and caged her litter in the Dermak Undercity at the Mines of Borro. The Shewolf Snared — playable since Preludes 8 — is the breaking of those chains in order: the mother freed first, trust earned print by glowing print, then the pups. Their names are Ciar, daughter of dusk; Cathal, son of the packhunt; Cuan, son of the dreamer's moon. Styne sets one last ambush and ends beneath her teeth. By blood pact Orengall entrusts a single pup to the Envoy's Nightfold, and grants her Pact besides.

One wolf is not saved. The runt, Nightling, is carried up to a Skytower by the Collector of Tempest Bayor, and the fable's last sight is the red-armed Envoy of the Ode petting her. At TennoCon 2026 the makers pledged more: the entrusted pup will grow, through bonding yet to come, into a rideable mount — promised for the fall, not yet in hand. Of Orengall's mate the sources say nothing. The record keeps that gap; the pack keeps its own counsel.

Bromius the Arbearer, ward of the Wevetwood, keeper of the Voicing Trees: in the old wood even the felling of timber was a privilege granted at his favor, as the Hews spruce-loggers knew. Then the Ode's pollution seeped into the roots of the Neath'uns, and under the creeping rise of Mendicant influence the kind bear drank the tainted sap. So the Arbearer became the Waste Bear, three-headed in his torment, and the official telling is a lament in one line: a sap-dream of a three-headed bear, dying trees, and a seed that won't grow.

His fable came with Preludes 11 and is playable now. The Envoy learns the Tree Tongue and the Song of Growth from dying elms, pursues the Mendicant Wazzard of Wastes across the Galvinar Wastes, and fights a bear who has swallowed the Wevetseed itself. Victory is not the ending; planting is. The Floppet draws the seed from the bear's body, the Envoy plays the song, the seed takes root — and Bromius is cleansed, not killed. His Pact names the Envoy ward of the Wevetwood, regent of the Neath'uns' roots; his gift, the Wise Elm, stands in the Nightfold still.
