The growing of the game

Most archives order a world's time. This one must also order its planting, for the world is still being grown, season by season, in the open. Here is Soulframe's own history: what was promised, what was shown, and what was handed to Envoys to play, reveal by reveal.

The Reveal

Every forest was a seed once, and every seed a promise kept in the dark.

A Name Spoken at the Fire

At TennoCon in the summer of 2022, the makers of Warframe stood before their gathered thousands and spoke a new name: Soulframe. Five minutes of moving picture, no more. A drowned world, a figure waking, a poem for narration. They called it a free-to-play fantasy — nature, restoration, exploration — the quiet yin to Warframe's roaring yang.

That same night the doors of soulframe.com opened for one purpose only: to let each traveler set down the name their Envoy would one day carry. No game to play. Only a name, held in trust. The archive remembers this as the first custom of the fellowship: before there was a land, there were names waiting for it.

The Maker Turns His Chair

Steve Sinclair, who had steered Warframe through its long decade, set down that tiller and took up this one. In his open letter he named Fantasy and Science Fiction the twin pillars of his studio's legacy, and vowed to give the new work the years he had given the old: "I want to spend as much time with Soulframe as I have with Warframe."

Beside him stood Geoff Crookes as Creative Director, who told the crowd where the seed had come from: the childhood favorites — The NeverEnding Story chief among them — and Miyazaki's old grief, the collision of growing things with grinding machines. From the first hour, the enemy was industry and the hero was the soil.

First Glimpses

The first green shoot tells you little of the tree: only that the ground is alive.

Half an Hour in a Haunted Land

A year passed before the curtain moved again. At TennoCon 2023, Sinclair and Crookes themselves sat at the controls and played thirty unbroken minutes before the crowd — the first true walk through the world. Those who watched called it haunting and achingly beautiful, and named its sword-teachers plainly: the patient cruelty of Elden Ring, the wind-led grace of Ghost of Tsushima.

It was a demonstration, not a door. Nothing yet to hold. But the shape of the thing was now attested by witnesses, and the archive marks the year for that: the year the story stopped being only a trailer.

A Balm, Not a Blade

That same season Sinclair gave the work its creed. Soulframe, he said, was "a response to the angry and anxious culture that we find ourselves in." Its heart would be healing and redemption: beasts to be freed rather than farmed, a world to be mended rather than mined.

Hold that creed close, for the chronicle will test it. Three years on, the same makers would deliberately let the shadow in — and the creed is what makes that turning mean something.

Preludes Opens

A door left ajar is an invitation; a door thrown open is a vow.

The First Telling

At TennoCon 2024 the makers began a custom of their own: Devstream the First, a fireside all Soulframe's own. They showed the opening quest — the Warsong Prologue, the Ode laying siege to the castle of the player's mother — and the birth of the Envoy, blue-armed from the first breath. Even the character creator bent toward story: it is your mother you shape there, and every choice is answered in a line of verse.

They showed the land to walk: Midrath's first island, near twice the breadth of Warframe's Plains of Eidolon. They showed the Nightfold, the hearth between hunts, and the Ancestors who keep it — Orlick the guide, Tuvalkane at the forge, and new-come Fen Jotarr, who tempers arms and armor. And they showed the Nimrod, staff coiled with captive lightning: the enemy's machinery given a face.

The Invitations Go Out

The vow of that summer was simple: Preludes — the rolling pre-alpha, the wet-clay years — would open to public sign-ups in the fall of 2024. Not a launch. A widening of the fire circle, invitation by invitation.

From this point the chronicle keeps two calendars at once: the devstreams, where the makers speak, and the numbered Preludes updates, where the land itself changes. Neither calendar rests for long.

A Sparrow Over Alca

Autumn kept the promise. Devstream 2, in October, offered what the makers called a sparrow's-eye view of Alca in Preludes — the region seen whole, from above, for the first time. By late November, Devstream 3 walked the fellowship through Preludes 8 and whispered of a pack-reunion storyline: wolves, scattered and waiting.

The archive notes the pattern set here, for it holds to this day: a devstream to speak the change, an update to make it true, six to ten weeks between breaths.

The Widening

Rings in the wood: each year wider, each year the same tree.

A Howl Rings Out

The year 2025 opened with wolves. Devstream 4 arrived in February under the teasing banner "a howl rings out," showing the wolf-work in progress; by early March, Devstream 5 had carried word of Preludes 9 to the fellowship, with new Ancestors at the Nightfold and new ground to walk. Devstream 6 widened Midrath further at March's end, and Devstream 7 in April dealt in the era's most precious currency: access codes.

The fruit of the howling was the fable of the Shewolf: Orengall the Omen wolf freed from her snare, her pups rescued, and her Pact — the summoner's path — given to those who finished the telling. Each of them kept a pup from that rescue. Remember the pup. The chronicle returns to it.

The Waste Bear Redeemed

At TennoCon 2025, on the nineteenth of July, Devstream 8 told of Bromius: an Omen bear soured by corruption, fought through two phases in the new Wevetwood — and then not slain but redeemed. No trophy, no pelt. A healing. If ever the creed of 2023 was made flesh, it was here. Devstream 9 told the update whole at August's end, and Preludes 11 carried the fable live on the twenty-first of September under the plain-sung line: hear fable of Waste Bear redeemed.

The same TennoCon stream showed the Wazzard of Wastes, a corrupted Mendicant conjurer whose spells could be parried back into his teeth; the hazardous under-dark called the Neath'uns; the Motes reforging craft; and new arms — a Fey pact sword, an Envoy bow, an Avakot machete. And once more the door opened: public sign-ups ran until the twentieth of July.

Festivals, Wylds and Founders

Between the great summer fires, the land kept growing in ordinary seasons. Preludes 10 raised the Festival of the Circade in June of 2025. Devstream 10 opened October looking back on the Waste Bear and ahead; Devstream 11, at that same month's end, spoke of a Founders program — the first shape of a way to give coin to the work — and of the Wylds, which Preludes 12 duly brought to Alca that November. Devstream 12, in January 2026, turned inward: a rework of the Virtues themselves, and new craft for the shaping of faces — made true that February by Preludes 13, called A Triquetra of Virtues.

Small entries, these, in any single month. Set side by side they are the true story of the era: a world thickening, festival by festival, system by system.

The Siren and the Ode'n Steel

Spring of 2026 gave the widening its finest fable yet. Devstream 13 spoke it first at March's end; then Preludes 14, called The Duelo, arrived on the sixteenth of April and sent players following blue ribbons through Midrath's shipwrecks, through three haunting duels, to the tale of Mestra Carmo — Siren of Coral Graves, finest swordstress of the Duelo. Her telling brought the Duelo Pact, with its flintlock and its ghostly mirror-self, and the rapiers Navalha and Espadarte. The music of that wreck was judged worthy of its own soundtrack release.

Hard on its heels came Preludes 14.5 in May, bearing a colossal weapon under the enemy's own mark: Ode'n Tempers. Note the word, reader, and note who owns it. Ode'n is the invader's brand, and the record keeps it as one keeps a scar — named, never borrowed.

Gods & Ghosts and the Open Door

When the fog lifted there was a new island in it, and the door stood open one last day.

Gods & Ghosts

Devstream 14 showed its makings at April's end, and Devstream 15, on the second of June, carried whisperings of it and of the TennoCon to come. Then on the tenth of June, 2026, Preludes 15 arrived under the name Gods & Ghosts — the build the fellowship walks today. Out of the fog rose Pigwen Skerry, new ground entire. The loot and crafting of the whole game were reworked; Chordstones came to Tuvalkane's forge, that weapons might be refined to legendary heights; Trading and Dispatches opened between Envoys; the Sieges learned to shift and the Mockeries grew sharper teeth.

All of this is playable now, this hour, in the live build. The archive states it plainly because so little in a pre-alpha stays still: this, for the moment, is the solid ground.

Warsongs on the Wind

At TennoCon 2026, on the eleventh of July, Devstream 16 named the next fable: Warsongs, coming in the fall. Its center is a new enemy — Tempest Bayor, a rare red-armed Envoy who has gone over to the invading Ode, a raven at his shoulder, voiced by Ben Starr. Beside him steps the Empress of Eldveil into the game for the first time, voiced by Jennifer English, who calls the part her dream: a fairy empress whose morals run with nature's own grain — and who seems to know more of Bayor than she tells. Some accounts give her the name Alora; the record waits on a firmer letter before carving it.

One more thread, and the archive names it honestly as noticing, not knowledge: the Shewolf's fable has spoken all along of "bayor's Collector," long before any Tempest was revealed. Whether that bayor and this one are the same soul, no source yet says. The gap is kept open, as gaps should be.

The Vadagar Shadow

With Warsongs comes the darkest announcement in the chronicle: the Vadagar Pact, born from machinery corrupting nature. It is built on twisted reflections of the Virtues — the enemy's corrupted Vespers of Doom, of Wrath, of Death, named here as the enemy's things and nothing else. Those who take the pact channel the invader's Ichor: glaives that arc and burst, tendrils that snare, stampedes of corrosive steeds. Even the face of the game transforms while it is worn. In the makers' own words, the player becomes the very monster the Ode has been making all along.

Crookes gave the turning its reason: meaningful growth, he said, does not truly come without a certain measure of despair and fear. Sinclair, being Sinclair, compared it to a certain film's infamous street-strutting scene and laughed. The creed of 2023 is not abandoned — but it will now be tested in the dark, which is where creeds earn their keep. All of this arrives with the fall story update; none of it is playable today.

The Open Door

The same stream scattered gifts across two seasons. Live at once: the Mendicant Reinbreaker, a mounted boss loosed into Preludes during the broadcast itself — and word that felling him may win his steed's trust. Coming in the fall: mounts in earnest, aimed near mid-October, the wolf pup of the Shewolf's fable grown at last to carry its Envoy, with petting and fetch and bonding to come first in an interim update. Coming also: a fishing craft that mends rather than takes — waters fouled by Ode'n bile, fish purified and released, with Grandfather Doyen at the heart of the telling — and weather that turns with real teeth, season-fish and shifting wildlife. Of consoles the crowd speaks eagerly, but no letter in this archive attests it; the record keeps the gap and says so.

And the door: any name set down at soulframe.com by the twelfth of July, 2026, at 11:59 in the evening, Eastern time, keeps its Preludes access until the wider public launch. After that hour, entry falls to a weekly raffle. Envoy — the door closes tonight.
