The Vadagar Pact

At TennoCon 2026 the makers of Soulframe set a dark dish on the hearth-table. Devstream 16, live from the show floor, announced the Vadagar Pact: a corrupted path of progression, born from machinery corrupting nature, arriving alongside the Warsongs Fable in the fall of 2026. Hear the folio's first law before its first wonder, Envoy: this thing is announced, not given. No hand in Preludes has worn it, and this record will not pretend otherwise.

Its promises are poison. The wearer channels the Ode's own Ichor — the very stuff of the invader's life, which (so the community's wiki keeps the telling) it must add to Alca's water and air before it can drink and breathe her — and turns it to war: glaives that arc and burst from foe to foe, tendrils that snare, a stampede of corrosive steeds that leaves murky pools in its wake. Even the frame around the world changes: equip the pact and the whole of the interface turns to match it. The reveal named the price without flinching — to take this arm is to become, in the reveal's own words, "the very monster the Ode has been creating."

Where the blue arm keeps three Virtues — Courage of Mora the red sun, Spirit of Iridis the moon, Grace of Saphene the blue sun — the Vadagar Pact keeps their twisted reflections, and calls them by the enemy's kind of word: Vespers. Vespers of Wrath, of Death, of Doom. Mark the music in that name, for the music is the tell. The invader calls itself a song of praise; its charm-song hollows the memory of those it takes; and now its gift-arm comes with evening prayers bound in. A vesper is a song sung at dusk. The Ode would have the Envoy's virtues sing at nightfall too.

Which Vesper stands shadow to which Virtue, the makers did not say. The record keeps that gap rather than guess at the pairing.

The name is older than the bargain, and any Envoy in Preludes may meet it tonight. Since Preludes 13 a Vadagar Bear has stalked Midrath under moonlit skies — a corrupted beast reborn as an Agari — and the mini-quest A Birdie Flown raises a Vadagar Stag from a corruption pool after dark. The community's wiki keeps the fuller telling: the Vadagar as spirits of Ichor that strain to mimic the forms of the Omen Beasts, gathering wherever corruption pools at night. Counterfeit omens, wearing borrowed shapes. The pact wears the mimics' name — why, the makers have not said — and the borrowing cuts both ways: the beasts mimic nature, and now the Envoy is invited to mimic the beasts.

The same wiki held concept art of an upcoming Corrupted Pact before TennoCon ever named the thing. Whether that art and the Vadagar Pact are one — likely, but nowhere confirmed — the record leaves open.

Why should a game sworn to healing hand its players poison? Geoff Crookes, the game's creative director, answered from the TennoCon stage: meaningful growth, he said, does not truly occur without a certain level of "despair and fear" — and life holds many paths toward redemption, of which Warsongs means to explore a darker one for the sake of the contrast. So the Vadagar Pact is the low road drawn deliberately beside the high: the Waste Bear was redeemed, the fishing yet to come promises corrupted fish cleansed and released rather than kept, and here at last is the question turned on the reader. And the era has its dark exemplar already — Tempest Bayor, the rare red-armed Envoy who took the invader's side, glimpsed in Preludes since The Shewolf Snared, whose Collector carried off Orengall's runt. Whether his road and this pact's are one road, no maker has said; the record sets them side by side and no closer.

What the pact will cost, whether its Vespers shut out the Virtues, whether the dark road can be walked back at all — the makers have not said, and the record will not say it for them. Come fall, come Warsongs, this folio will be re-inked.
