The Ode

The Ode came from the distant cosmos: a colonising power, machine-fed and sky-borne, that holds Alca under violent occupation. They do not walk the land they take. They hang above it in Skytowers, and their mercenaries, the Sinecure, descend to strip Alca of her flesh and remake the world in the shape their masters prefer. So ran the official site copy of early 2026 — since rotated off the live page, and kept word-for-word by Wikipedia and the wiki-keepers of Avakot, as this record's caveats note — and so the land shows: Dendria's rivers run polluted with Ode'n engines, and the wiki-keepers add that Midrath has been worked over so severely its climate can no longer make snow. That last detail is theirs, and the record marks it so.

The night of their coming has an official name — the Ode'n Descent, when the Spellsong 'caused all to forget' — and it is playable now. The intro Fable Warsongs — in the game since Preludes 8, replayable in the Preludes 15 build — shows the Ode falling upon Dendria and the siege of Castle Kearnhold: an infant saved by its Mother while the Spellsong poured over the armies of Midrath, so that not a sword was drawn against the invader. They conquered less by killing than by making a people forget there had ever been anything worth defending. Afterward they burned the Histories, and took even the names of the towns.

At the top sits Lord Synod, high sovereign of the Ode, who covets the Omen Beasts for his own twisted ends and burns the Histories of every land he takes. He has appeared exactly once: a flashback vision in The Waste Bear (playable since Preludes 11), where he forces Tempest Bayor to grovel and demands one thing — the Empress. What manner of being he is, and where his empire keeps its hearth-world, no source says. The record keeps the gap.

Beneath him, by the ledger the wiki-keepers of Avakot have compiled from Journal and fable: Inquisitors, Torque and Mada — it was the Torque Inquisitor who cast the Player Envoy from the Skytowers in Year 925. Then the Medis, engineers of corruption; official Preludes 13 copy names Medis Gyon 'plague doctor of the stars', overseer of the Organ. Then Castellans, Bannerets, and the Sinecure: zealous mercenary soldiery whose very name means an office paid for doing nothing. Whether the Sinecure are human, Ode, or some other conscripted kind is unknown even to the wiki; under Alca's heavy air their flesh swells with the Smogswell. Lowest of all stand the spellsung — conscript legions called Tempest and Forgetfire, hollowed Alcans and captured bluebloods. The Player Envoy was one of them, once.

Ichor is the basis of all Ode'n life — so the wiki-keepers read the Journal — and Alca's water and air must be dosed with it before the Ode can drink or breathe. Their terraforming is not malice first; it is digestion. The engines that do the pouring wear musicians' names twisted wrong — Moaners, Mistrels, Shredders, so the wiki-keepers' ledger runs — and chief among them the Organ, the massive polluter machine built upon a Dendrit tower in Preludes 13, breathing deadly Ichor and billowing smoke under Medis Gyon's care. Official copy attests the Neath'uns root-caves choked with ichor since Preludes 11, and a fallen Ode castle — the Fallen Skytower — rising out of the corruptive flood.

What Ichor touches, it claims. Living creatures twist into the Corrupted. The latent dead rise as the Mendicant, a third power that serves no one, least of all the Ode. And in corruption pools at night gather the Vadagar: spirits of Ichor that mimic the forms of the Omen Beasts, imitation worn as shape. At TennoCon 2026 (Devstream 16) a Vadagar Pact was announced for fall, by which an Envoy may wield this same fluid. That is a promise, not yet a build, and this record files it as such.

An ode is a song of praise. That is the invader's name, and everything it makes keeps the bitter joke going. Its weapon of first resort is the gaunting Spellsong, music that empties the remembering mind; its corrupted virtues — announced at TennoCon 2026, not yet in any Envoy's hands — are called Vespers; its polluter is an Organ; its engines, by the wiki-keepers' ledger, are Moaners and Mistrels. Where Alca's own smiths sing steel into names — Steelsinger, Chordstone — the Ode's forges issue serial numbers: Orst-III, Vrusht-IX, disparate bludgeons forged in search of uniform truth, as the Preludes 14.5 copy has it. The numeral is the tell. A thing with a name was made once, for someone. A thing with a serial was made again and again, for no one.

Yet even their steel can change its tune. The Envoy Forge drop (Preludes 13 Hotfix 5, February 2026) put two captured Ode weapons in Alcan hands, turned against their creators: the Avex, a steel-studded boundbow of Ode'n technology, and the Falx, the curved arcblade of a Sinecure soldier. And the official site keeps one question lit like a hearth left burning: who will learn the melodies of soul unbinding, and break the gaunting spellsong? Not their song, Envoy. Yours.
