The Ancestors
Answer a dead soul's story and it follows you home: the Nightfold's household is built one Fable at a time.
What the Dead Keep
The old site copy asks it plainly: who will find the Silvern Seas and awaken our Ancestors? The answer is the Envoy, and the manner is the Fable. Answer a spirit's story out on Midrath — carry the helm, return the quill, follow the rat — and that spirit follows you home. For each one a station rises from the water of the Silvern Sea: a forge, a cauldron, a study, and the household grows by one ghost. The dead keep shop where the living keep faith.
Mark the word well, Envoy: Ancestor does not mean blood. It names those the land itself remembers — its smiths, its witches, its scholars — and one of their number, Zenith the merchant, is a camel. The bond deepens with keeping company, and since Preludes 14.5: Ode'n Tempers the Ancestors have wandered Midrath beside the Omen Beasts, each offering a grace to the Envoy who finds them — a custom Gods & Ghosts has since refined. First among the gathered came Orlick the Bicameral, the dearly departed historian; his tale is a folio of its own, kept with the Pensives.
The Steelsinger's Successor
The SteelsingerThe Sinecure dug where they should not, and out of the earth came the Moonsteel Helm of Kane — the legendary Steelsinger, whose hammer is a byword still. The helm is too heavy for fighting; the Envoy must carry it in both arms, defenceless as a mourner, to a run-down smithy. Set it by the cold furnace and the fire answers. Tuvalkane, Kane's granddaughter and successor, rises to an anvil she does not believe she has earned: she will tell you she never wore Kane's helm and never will deserve to. She hammers anyway.
In the Nightfold her forge rings through every hour of the Envoy's war: crafting, reforging, and — since Preludes 15: Gods & Ghosts — the refining of weapons with Chordstones, steel sung toward legend. And Orlick, who misses little, lets one thing slip in his sagas: he names the Envoy a descendant of the Steelsinger Kane. If the old ghost is right, the smith who doubts herself is family.
Colours for the Drowned
Brewer of HuesVerminia was a witch of the Coven, and the Coven's witches were drowned. Death left her grey: a synesthete who once tasted colour now tastes only bitter salt water, the flavour of her own ending. So she brews. Every palette that bubbles from her cauldron gives her back one stripe of the rainbow, and the Nightfold's hues — its dyes, its stitching, the Envoy's own face — are her feast. Her rats she calls Poppets, and the fables credit them with foresight: it was a freed Poppet that led the Envoy through the Andurin Glades, past the storm-wielding Nimrod, to her hidden cave in Brewer of Hues, playable since Preludes 6.
She is not an easy houseghost. Grow close enough and you will find her station empty and a note in her hand: I HAVE RUN AWAY. Do NOT come looking for me. Go looking. She waits in the ravine where the Envoy first found her, lamenting the greys of the Nightfold and the last moments they call to mind, and a single Lullily flower brings her home — so runs A Witch Withdrawn, playable since Preludes 11.
The Siren and the Grandfather
The Wreck of Mestra CarmoMestra Carmo was the finest swordstress of the Duelo and mistress of the Blue Ribbon crew; the Silvern Sea took her, and the coral kept her. They call her the Siren of Coral Graves. Since Preludes 14: The Duelo her fable waits at a shipwreck south of Mirifuir: gather the ribbon, pull the blades from the sand, and duel her phantom three times — longsword, polearm, rapier — until the Mestra title passes to the Envoy and the ribbon's curse lets her go. She comes to the Nightfold not as a foe defeated but as a soul freed, and the official copy still carries her dare: raise your blade.
Grandfather Doyen is kin, not yet company — mind the distinction, Envoy: no Fable has gathered him, and no station of his rises from the Silvern water. He raised the Envoy at Rivernest on the western shore; his sparrow is the Guide upon the Envoy's shoulder; the fables hold him only in glimpses of childhood, and his present whereabouts are a gap this record keeps open. At TennoCon 2026, Devstream 16 announced fishing for a season yet to come — the Envoy cleansing the catch of Ode'n bile and letting it go free, the telling braided with childhood memories of fishing at Doyen's side. Announced, Envoy, not yet playable. Even his name is held loosely: the wiki warns it does not yet appear in-game and may change.
